About us
We are the Malmesbury branch of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) and we have about 100 members. Our branch area covers Malmesbury and the surrounding villages. We do as much fundraising as we can throughout the year, and our major events are our nearly new sales, held twice a year in the town.
We have an active programme of antenatal and refresher classes, and can help new and expectant parents with breastfeeding advice and support.
We are always on the lookout for new members and volunteers, but you can also just come along to any of our events or regular coffee mornings to meet other local parents.
About the NCT
The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) is Britain’s best-known charity concerned with education for parenthood. It is run by, and for, parents through its network of approximately 350 branches and groups. The NCT offers help and support to members and non-members alike.
Vision
The NCT wants all parents to have an experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood that enriches their lives and gives them confidence in being a parent.
We EXIST to offer information and support in pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood
We CAMPAIGN to improve maternity care and ensure better services and facilities for new parents
We AIM to give every parent the opportunity to make informed choices
We WANT to make sure that everyone has access to our services and activities.
The NCT provides the following services:
- ANTENATAL CLASSES
These give parents the chance to become informed about all aspects of pregnancy, birth and life with a new baby. Relaxation, breathing techniques, massage and different birth positions are practised and explained enabling parents to approach the birth of their baby confidently. - BREASTFEEDING COUNSELLING
The NCT actively promotes breastfeeding because of the many advantages it offers to both mother and baby. Breastfeeding counsellors are available to help mothers establish and continue breastfeeding. They provide information and emotional support to help overcome problems and difficulties, enabling mother and baby to breastfeed for as long as they wish. - POSTNATAL SUPPORT
The NCT postnatal support system introduces mothers and fathers to other parents and children in their areas, giving them the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences. As well as offering support to individuals, local branches organise a wide variety of activities from social gatherings to fund-raising events, from discussion groups to informal talks. - RESEARCH
The NCT carries out its own research amongst members. The results enables the NCT to offer better information to parents and advise health professionals of the feelings and opinions of expectant parents and those with children. The NCT provides a consumer voice to ensure that new practices are properly researched and that anyone participating in research trials is properly informed. - EDUCATION
NCT members visit schools and colleges to take part in education courses. The purpose is to give a realistic view of life; including pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenthood. - SERVICE ON LOCAL HEALTH COMMITTEES
NCT members represent the interests and experiences of health service users on Maternity Liaison Committees and various other bodies. This feedback to health professionals and participation in planning helps to ensure that future maternity care best meets the needs of those for whom it is provided.
